Mandria

Mandria is a quiet, quaint farming village located 10km from the hustle and bustle of Paphos, 5km from Paphos airport, 3km from Secret Valley and Aphrodite Hills Championship golf courses; And a short walk from secluded sandy beaches.

.Within the village there is a bank, small supermarket, a gift shop, coffee shop, bakery & home made icecream shop.

Within the village square there are two tavernas.  Yiannis Taverna is a traditional taverna where you can sit outside under a vine with grapes hanging.
George's taverna on the other side of the square is slightly better equipped for eating inside.  On a friday night there is live Cypriot entertainment at George's.  Both Tavernas are exceptional value, meals and drinks for the evening are unlikely to cost more than £5 per head.
Mandria is ideal for nature lovers, with gentle views over rolling fields, and fruit groves to the sea.  The area is well known for its flora, and bird watching.  As well as the traditional fruit groves, the area has a number of peanut plantations.  Each October the village celebrates the peanut harvest with a Festival of song, dance and wine.
Mandria being a village does not suffer from hordes of tourists.  Consequently the secluded beach coves at Mandria are often empty or very quiet.  The beaches are a short 10 minute walk through the fruit groves and peanut fields over flat ground.  It is also possible to go fishing from the beaches

Golf in Cyprus, Golf Courses in Cyprus

The Villa is located approximately 3 km away from the international golf course (18 holes) Secret Valley and 5 km from the Aphrodite Hills Golf Course (international standard 18.hotels) . In addition, the Tsada Golf Course(18 holes) is located 30 km away.

Cyprus now has 3 golf courses in the Paphos area on the southwest corner of the island. More than enough to keep you occupied for your holiday. In addition to this planning permission has been granted for further courses to be developed so making Cyprus a new golf destination. The jewel in the crown is of course the new Aphrodite Hills completed in November 2002. A brief description of the 3 Paphos Cyprus golf courses follows.

The Aphrodite Hills Golf Club

Imagine a vision of sunny skies and world class sport, picture an undulating course dotted with olive and carob trees, manicured fairways and challenging pot bunkers overlooking the sea, a journey that begins with enthusiasm and ends in immense satisfaction. Aphrodite sits atop 2 plateaus overlooking the Mediterranean coastline and the fabled birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite - the Petra tou Romiou (the Rock of Venus).

The 6,665 meter-long course is a par 71 designed by Cabell B. Robinson. The five tee positions give every golfer a fair chance. This great complex includes an academy par 3 course for learners; an excellent 350m double ended driving range off grass. 4 target greens with bunkers and a short game practice area. It has 2 resident professional instructors. The spacious and well-appointed clubhouse has a pro-shop and locker rooms, and the bar and restaurant terraces afford the most magnificent views over the coastline and out to sea.

The Secret Valley Golf Club

The Secret Valley Golf Club is 18km east of Paphos, very close to the Petra tou Romiou, and lies in a scenic valley of many-coloured rock formations, softened by the planting of many trees and flowering shrubs along the fairways. This is only 5 minutes from Aphrodite Hills. This is a par 71 course of 5,904 meters in length, and offers practice facilities including chipping areas with bunkers and putting greens. The wooden-built clubhouse is similar to that at Tsada, with a veranda overlooking the man-made lake and flowering gardens. You can walk this course or take a buggy

Pissouri

Pissouri village is perhaps the only seaside village in Cyprus which has retained its original architecture and environment. The village itself stands on a hilltop with a sea level difference of 250 metres and for the most part is built using solid stone walls.

The village income is mainly from agriculture (vineyards) and the local vineyards set in the valley (next to the villa) are considered to be some of the best on the island. The village has extensive forestland which provides miles for walking in a most pleasant and enjoyable environment.

The village centre has been preserved with Governmental assistance and a village square which is surrounded be small family run restaurants and cafes, is extremely popular among both locals and foreign visitors.

The village, in addition to the family run businesses in the village itself, provides shops / entertainment / restaurants situated within the bay, at a distance of 500 metres west of the villa.

Sports -Sea sports are available on the beach, while the walkways and agricultural roads are available for those who want to walk within nature.

Cyprus Golf holidays - The Villa is located approximately 10 km away from the international golf course (18 holes) Secret Valley and its nearby Aphrodite Hills Golf Course (international standard 18.hotels). In addition, the Tsada GolfCourse(18 holes) is located 40 km away

Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou)

At the entrance of the administrative region of Pafos' district, in the south coast of the island and in one of the most beautiful beaches of Cyprus, with excellent natural beauty where the mountain sluggishly joins with the sea, lies "Petra tou Romiou".
It is a large rock -actually an atoll -from the depths of the ocean's bed. Upon the rock one can find fossils, corals, and pieces of shells. The rock is accompanied by other smaller rocks, in the sea and on the nearby shore.

A rock ridden with legend, tradition, and memories. A rock with which the whole island associates with. The fertile Greek imagination chose Cyprus -and that rock in particular -as the place where the Goddess of Beauty and Love emerged out of the froth of the sea.

According to tradition, the name of the rock -Petra tou Romiou" (rock of the Greek) -relates to the legend of Digenis Akritas of the mediaeval times. Tradition reports that this huge rock was hurtled by Digenis against the Saracen raiders from the mountains of Troodos.

The ancient legend however wants Petra and the entire complex of naked rocks to be fragments of a large oyster that carried Aphrodite to the beaches of Cyprus, after it journeyed her to the seas and the oceans.

In the region of Petra tou Romiou, legend, tradition, unsparing natural beauty, the sun, the sea, and the blue colour of the sky play between them and create a very dream-like scene.

Kato Paphos

The capital of the west and positively teeming with history is Paphos, site of the island's second international airport. The resort town (Kato Pafos) has as its focal point a charming fishing harbour by Paphos Fort, lined with open-air cafes and tavernas that serve a tempting menu of the day's

It was on Paphos shoreline that the mythological Goddess Aphrodite was born, a legend that spawned a massive wave of cult worship from neighbouring countries that lasted several centuries. The large rock that juts from the sea is known as 'Petra tou Romiou' - The Venus Rock - while the Baths of Aphrodite at Polis also echoes her apparent penchant for the island. At Palaepaphos, Kouklia lie the remains of the Goddess' earliest Sanctuary.

Another 'first' for Paphos was its early recognition of Christianity. While under Roman rule in 45 A.D., it was here that Saint Paul converted the first ruler to the faith.

The legacy from its remarkable history adds up to nothing less than an open museum, so much so that UNESCO simply added the whole town to its World Cultural Heritage List. Among the treasures iiiK-arlhed, are the remarkable mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion, beautifully preserved after 16 centuries under the soil. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the Pillar to which Saint Paul was allegedly tied and whipped, the ancient Odeon Theatre and other places of interest including the Byzantine Museum and the its Archaeological Museum.

Unavoidably, sooner or later, the children in the group will have had enough of culture, nature and "old ruins", and a day at Aphrodite's massive water park (a few minutes drive away) will get everybody excited for days before and thrilled and content for days after. Of course you can join in as well (if you dare!).
